Our top sights
MAINAU ISLAND: CASTLE PARK, BOTANICAL GARDEN AND CHILDREN'S PARADISE
Lush blossoms all year round, a park with a tree population over 150 years old, the baroque splendor of the palace and church, plus the mediterranean character - that is Mainau. With one of the largest butterfly houses in Germany and the extraordinary adventure playgrounds "Wasserwelt" and "Blumis Uferwelt" in the children's world. Mainau is one of the most popular leisure destinations at Lake Constance www.mainau.de
PILE TREE MUSEUM UNTERUHLDINGEN: BEAUTIFUL LIVING IN THE STONE AGE
When the waters of Lake Constance revealed a few weathered pile stumps in the middle of the 19th century, an exciting guessing game began about the architectural preferences of our Stone Age ancestors. Since 1922, a total of 20 pile dwellings from the Neolithic and Late Bronze Age have been reconstructed on its northern shore. On a tour you can immerse yourself in the life of Stone Age and Bronze Age farmers, fishermen and fisherwomen, potters and shepherds. The pile dwellings are lovingly furnished in great detail with vessels, trinkets and utensils. www.pfahlbauten.de
ISLAND REICHENAU: AN ISLAND FOR THE SOUL
As if poured into it, the green island of Reichenau lies in Untersee, the western part of Lake Constance. Tall columnar poplars tower over the causeway that connects it to the mainland - an impressive entrance! Since 2000, the island's three Romanesque churches and monastic heritage have been on the UNESCO World Heritage List, making it one of the most popular sights on Lake Constance for those interested in culture. Three modern museum units provide insight into the history of the monastery. Today, Reichenau lives to a good extent from vegetable cultivation. Herbs, fruits and vegetables can be purchased at stalls along many of the streets and in front of the farms. TIP: On narrow paths you can walk along the vegetable gardens and the shore on a circular route once around the whole island. www.reichenau.de

THE RHEINFALL OF SCHAFFHAUSEN: SIMPLY OVERWHELMING
Over a width of 150 meters, an average of around 800,000 liters of water per second plunge 23 meters into the depths. Three panoramic trails take you up close to the largest waterfall in Europe. You should not miss the ride and the ascent to the middle rock either. But be careful: depending on the waves and wind, it can get a little wet. www.schaffhauserland.ch
ALPINE AREA AND SÄNTIS: WELCOME TO SWISS APPENZELLERLAND
From Fischbach, the massive mountain on the other side of the lake looks like a mighty outpost of the Alps. The mountain massif is called Alpstein and it culminates in the so-called Säntis, at 2,502 meters the highest mountain in eastern Switzerland. Four mountain railroads lead to the heights: from Wasserauen to Ebenalp, from Brülisau to Hoher Kasten, from Jakobsbad to Kronberg and from Schwägalp to the Säntis summit. Wherever you are traveling in the Alpstein: You don't need to think about provisions. With 25 mountain inns, the hiking area has a great "supply density" that ranges from the rustic hut to the self-service restaurant.
PFÄNDER: BREGENZ HAUSBERG WITH A FANTASTIC VIEW OF LAKE CONSTANCE
Throughout the year, the Pfänderbahn floats up to one of the most impressive Alpine peaks on Lake Constance. The view that Bregenz's local mountain offers of Lake Constance and the three neighboring countries is magnificent. Hiking trails, bicycle routes, rustic inns, an alpine game park and the daily air shows are the ingredients for an all-around successful excursion to the Austrian summit. www.pfaenderbahn.at
DEPARTURE WITH THE WHITE FLOT: LITTLE CRUISES ON LAKE CONSTANCE
Not far from the Hotel Maier, the excursion boats of the White Fleet depart from the shipping pier in Friedrichshafen between March and October. You can explore the beautiful lake region from the water in the direction of Bregenz, Lindau, Mainau or Constance. This is a real experience in any weather. By the way, the Lake Constance ferry also shuttles between Friedrichshafen and the Swiss town of Romanshorn on the other side of the lake. www.bsb.de
